FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A former regular guest on Fox News stole at least $224,000 from her 88-year-old mother and unnecessarily put her in a nursing home twice against her will, including by once dragging her mom from her home, Florida authorities said Friday.
Cathy Areu, who provided a liberal perspective on several shows, faces numerous felony charges including kidnapping, exploitation of the elderly and organized scheme to defraud. Miami-Dade County prosecutors say she falsified documents to take control of her mother’s home, took money from her mother’s reverse mortgage and savings account, and took out credit cards in her mother’s name and then used them for her own benefit.
“Every incident of alleged elder exploitation or abuse touches our heart and never fails to shock us. It seems particularly harder to understand when the alleged perpetrator of the exploitation is a daughter, or a son or another blood relative,” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement.
According to Areu’s Fox News profile, she is a former contributing editor for the Washington Post Magazine, where she conducted political interviews from 2001 to 2012, and in 2001 founded the magazine Catalina. It sought to “break stereotypes and show a positive side of the U.S. Hispanic community.” She also hosted the “Liberal Sherpa” podcast. Fox took down Areu’s profile after her arrest became widely known.
In 2018, Areu, 51, was a regular unpaid guest on conservative commentator Tucker Carlson’s show and appeared on other Fox News shows. In 2020, she sued the network, Carlson, Sean Hannity and others, claiming sexual harassment, but a judge dismissed the suit the following year.
Details of Areu’s arrest were not released, but prosecutors said she had been evading authorities since June, including spending time in Mexico. She was being held without bond Friday at the county jail. Court and jail records do not show if she has an attorney.
According to prosecutors, the investigation began in 2019 when state officials received reports that Areu was exploiting her mother. Paperwork had been filed turning over the mother’s house to Areu, but the mother denied the signature was hers.
They say Areu also used a revoked power of attorney to twice place her mother in a nursing home against her will. In the first case, they say Areu tricked her mother into believing she was being taken to have ice cream with her granddaughters, but was instead taken to a home. When the mother tried to call a friend for help, Area allegedly told the staff not to let her use the phone or see visitors.
After doctors and officials found the woman competent to make her own decisions and released her to go home, prosecutors say Areu and another person dragged her from the house and took her to another facility. Again, the woman was released after she was found competent and asked to go home.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.

With the upcoming Midterm Election just over a month away from now — Nov. 8th, 2022 — there are probably a ton of questions the incumbents U.S. Congressional (U.S. Representatives, and U.S. Senators) candidates would absolutely HATE to be asked by either the Media, or a regular taxpayer during an Open Town Hall, or maybe a, Candidates’ Debate forum.
Republican candidates could be asked questions about former president Donald Trump, even though the guy’s been a “Private Citizen” now for almost TWO (2) years, so to draw any type of association with Trump is sort of like researching Ancient History.
Democrat candidates, on the other hand, are sort of “joined at the Hip” with President Joe Biden. And if you happen to be an incumbent Democrat, running for Reelection, your voting record since Biden’s inauguration Day will probably be mentioned several dozen, maybe even several hundred, times by your Republican challenger. Unfortunately, for the Democrat incumbents, most of Biden’s decisions as President haven’t been too pleasing to most American taxpayers. It’s sort of like having “Buyer’s Remorse” on your Presidential choice. This past Summer, for example, when the White House asked many of these incumbent Democrat Congressional candidates if they’d like to have Biden come down with them on the campaign trail and make a speech on their behalf, they would, more often than not, refuse that invitation.
That brings me down to the purpose of this particular posting — What 2 Questions you should NEVER ask an incumbent U.S. Congressional Democrat candidate running in this year’s Midterm Election? The very first one, would be a slight paraphrase of Ronald Reagan’s question to the American people immediately following his 1980 Presidential debate against then-incumbent Democrat president Jimmy Carter — “Are YOU better off today, Financially speaking (also more Safe), than you were just two (2) years ago ?”
With a Republican challenger posing a question like that, most American citizens are VERY FAMILIAR just how much they’re paying to refuel their vehicles; they’re also very familiar how much prices increased in Supermarkets with meat, poultry, eggs, bacon, milk, fruits, vegetable, cleaning products, etc.; and lastly, how exactly has your 401K and Mutual Funds got cut down to size during the Biden administration?
My second question would be in light of the FBI “raiding” Donald Trump’s Florida home recently — “Do you believe the FBI and the DOJ have “fairly treated” Donald Trump compared with any investigations they may have had regarding, let’s say, Hunter Biden, Joe Biden, or Hillary Clinton?” It’s absolutely mind-boggling how our FBI “raided and seized the property of a former U.S. President”, but how about seizing the iPhones and files of Trump’s lawyers — what ever happened to Attorney-Client privilege? Also, why were Trump’s: Passport, Tax Records, and Last Will and Testament ever seized in that “Raid”? Lastly, if the FBI, or DOJ can pull a stunt and “raid the residence” of a former president, they could EASILY do the same type of thing to you or I.
Andrew from the YouTube blog, ‘Don’t Walk, Run! Productions‘ did an excellent job breaking down the various categories of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address last week at the Capitol building in Washington D.C. Among the topics discussed in this Video includes: the current War in the Ukraine, the COVID virus, our Southern border, the American Inflation (Economy) problem, and the Crime problem (riots) in our Major Cities. In his 2022 SOTU address, which was a little more than an hour long, President Biden NEVER mentioned China, NOR did he bother talking about America’s FAILED MILITARY DEPARTURE FROM AFGHANISTAN.
Any thoughts about voting, Straight-Ticket Republican on Nov. 3rd? If you need a little convincing, please ask yourself, why the heck would any U.S. Rep or U.S. Senator PUBLICLY ENCOURAGE Riotous behavior in their respective communities?
What’s a more important issue than KEEPING PEOPLE SAFE — That would be, SAFE FROM ALL ENEMIES, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC.
Why the heck should we vote these Shysters into Elected Office, with annual salaries of about $200K, so they can, in turn, screw over me and my property? I don’t think so.
Maybe the Democrats need a couple of Terms OUT OF PUBLIC OFFICE, to think about this for a while.
Bottom Line: Please consider voting Straight-Ticket Republican for: President, U.S. Senator, U.S. Rep, and Governor on Nov. 3rd, to hopefully, Make America Safe Again!

Nun’s rosary beads stolen at knife-point in Massachusetts
Boston, Mass., Aug 25, 2016 / 06:02 am (CNA/EWTN News).- A religious sister was robbed while on a walk in civilian clothing on Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Massachusetts, authorities said.
According to a report from a local CBS affiliate, police said that a sister with the Daughters of Mary of Nazareth convent was walking shortly after 2 p.m. when she was approached by Vanessa Young, 26, who was armed with a small knife.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” Young told the victim, according to police reports.
The nun noticed Young’s knife and another woman acting as a lookout, so she opened her satchel to reveal a rosary, a key and a small memento. The vows of the Daughters of Mary of Nazareth include a vow of poverty.
Vanessa Young told the victim, “I’ll guess I’ll take the rosary beads,” police said.
The sister then returned safely to her convent and reported the incident to the police.
Soon after, police found the two women matching the sister’s descriptions. Police reported that the pair were found with other stolen items – a checkbook and several cellphones – that had been reported missing during a house break in that occurred in the same neighborhood around the same time as the robbery.
Vanessa Young was arrested and charged with armed robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon and breaking and entering daytime to commit a felony.
The woman acting as a lookout during the robbery incident was identified as 26 year-old Crystal Young, the legal spouse of Vanessa Young. Crystal was arrested and charged with armed robbery and accessory after the fact.
The pair pleaded not guilty in court on Monday.
“I was immediately concerned to make sure that they would get the help and that they will get the resources that they need because my heart goes after them,” said Mother Olga of the Sacred Heart, the Mother Superior and founder of the Daughters of Mary of Nazareth.
The stolen rosary beads have not yet been recovered.
